Wisconsin's trophy reputation is backed by decades of record-book data. Boone and Crockett's sixth-edition analysis listed Wisconsin first all-time with 1,822 entries through 2019. Buffalo County has long been one of the most productive trophy-whitetail counties in North America.

Illinois: A Record-Book Giant

Illinois ranked #2 historically with 1,445 B&C entries through 2019. Rich agricultural soils, productive crop ground, river systems, and mature timber have helped build its big-buck reputation.

Iowa: The Bucket-List Draw

Iowa ranked #3 historically with 1,330 entries through 2019. For nonresidents, access to an any-sex deer license is generally handled through a drawing and preference-point system.

Ohio: A Modern Trophy Surge

Ohio was #5 historically in the B&C sixth-edition ranking, but recent record-book data moved it to #3 for 2022–2024.
